Don't replace the opener until you've checked these
A garage door opener that suddenly stops can be frustrating, but the fix is often simpler (and cheaper) than a full replacement. Here are the seven things we check first — try them before you call.
1. Check the power
Make sure the opener is plugged in and the outlet has power. GFCI outlets in garages trip often, especially in our Colorado humidity swings. Test another device in the same outlet.
2. Replace the remote battery
A weak remote battery is the most common cause of "my opener died." Swap in a fresh battery before anything else.
3. Look at the photo-eye sensors
The two small sensors near the floor must face each other and have clear, blinking indicator lights. If the door opens but won't close, dirty or misaligned sensors are almost always the culprit. Wipe the lenses and nudge them until both lights are solid.
4. Check the lock button on the wall panel
Many wall consoles have a "lock" or "vacation" button. If it's on, your remotes are disabled. Hold it to toggle it off.
5. Test the wall button vs. the remote
If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, it's a remote/receiver issue. If neither works, it's more likely the motor or logic board.
6. Listen to the motor
If the motor hums but the door doesn't move, the trolley may be disengaged (check the emergency release cord) or a gear/belt may be stripped.
7. Reprogram the remote
After power outages, remotes sometimes lose their pairing. Consult your opener brand's reprogramming steps — usually a "Learn" button on the motor unit.
When to call us
If you've worked through these and the door still won't budge, the issue is usually a stripped gear, a failed logic board, or a worn-out motor. We repair all major brands — LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman — and we'll always tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement is the smarter spend.
