You heard a loud BANG from the garage — now the door won't open
If your garage door suddenly feels impossibly heavy, won't lift, or you heard a loud bang that sounded like a gunshot, you almost certainly have a broken torsion spring. It is the single most common garage door failure we see across Longmont, and it happens to almost every door eventually.
Garage door springs are wound under extreme tension and do the heavy lifting every time your door opens. A standard spring is rated for roughly 10,000 cycles — about 7 to 10 years of normal use. Cold Colorado winters shorten that lifespan, which is why we get the most spring calls between November and March.
What you should do right now
- Stop using the opener. Forcing a door with a broken spring can burn out your opener motor or bend the panels and tracks.
- Do not try to lift it manually. With a broken spring the door can weigh 150–350 lbs and can slam down without warning.
- Disconnect the opener by pulling the red emergency release cord, and leave the door down.
- Call a professional. This is a same-day fix for us.
Why you should never DIY a torsion spring
We say this on every call: torsion springs are genuinely dangerous. They store enormous energy, and a slip while winding can break fingers, wrists, or worse. The replacement parts are also cheap compared to an ER visit. This is one repair where calling a pro is the right move every time.
How we fix it (and how fast)
Most spring replacements take us under an hour. We always recommend replacing springs in pairs so the second one doesn't fail a few weeks later, and we use higher-cycle springs when we can to extend the life of your system. We carry common sizes on the truck, so most Longmont customers are back up and running the same day they call.
